A man accused of killing his mother in her Narragansett apartment and dumping her remains in the trash was ordered held without bail Wednesday.
Robert Taylor did not enter a plea to a charge of domestic murder at his formal arraignment in Washington County District Court. A bail hearing was set for May 15, according to the Providence Journal.
Taylor, 45, was arrested Tuesday after a day-long investigation at his mother's apartment on Caswell Street. He was held overnight in the psychiatric unit of Rhode Island Hospital.
Police went to the apartment to question Taylor about a nearby church break-in, but they found signs of a gruesome crime.
"It was immediately evident to the officer that something had happened in the apartment," Police Chief Dean Hoxsie said.
Evidence inside the apartment led them out back to a trash container, where police found remains of the victim.
"We unearthed the contents of the Dumpster. As we did that, human remains were found within the Dumpster," Hoxsie said.
Investigators are awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine how the woman died.
Police said Taylor has a criminal history, but investigators said they have yet to determine a motive in the killing of his mother.
The killing has upset people in town.
"It's very alarming. It's very shocking that someone could do that, especially to their own mom," Ron Palazzo said. "That's pretty pathetic."
