New Bedford man arrested for armed robbery outside mall

A New Bedford man is under arrest after an attempted armed robbery Monday in the parking lot of the North Dartmouth Mall.

Massachusetts State Troopers from the Dartmouth barracks received a 911 call just before 5-p-m reporting a man was in the parking lot of the North Dartmouth Mall pointing a firearm at a person in a vehicle, parked in front of JC Penney. Troopers Kyle Duarte and Christopher Meleo responded to the mall.

Upon arrival, the troopers were signaled by the victim. A male subject, 26-year-old Corey J. Mahon of New Bedford was identified as the suspect that reportedly was attempting to rob the victim at gunpoint.

Mahon was taken into custody without incident. In his possession, he had an Ekol Botan 9mm PAK (Starter pistol). Dartmouth Police also assisted at the scene.

As a result of an investigation, Mahon was placed under arrest and transported to the Dartmouth Barracks. Mahon will be charged in New Bedford District Court on the following charges: assault with a dangerous weapon, attempt to commit armed robbery, threats to commit bodily harm, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
