RI Blood Center opens new lab

The Rhode Island Blood Center is opening a new 20,000-square-foot laboratory for the testing of donated blood from Rhode Island and many hospitals in Massachusetts.{}{} {}Gov. Lincoln Chafee helped give the new laboratory a ceremonial opening Thursday morning at the Blood Center's office in Providence.{}{} {}The $8 million lab will allow the lab to test more blood for infectious disease. The center also matches blood and blood products for use in hospitals.{}{} {}The center serves all of Rhode Island as well as some hospitals in Massachusetts and Connecticut. Founded in 1979, the center collects about 280 units of blood every day.
