Newport Jazz Festival kicks off 60th anniversary
The Newport Jazz Festival kicks off its 60th anniversary with a lineup of young and emerging artists, and a few old favorites sprinkled in.
The three-day festival begins Friday afternoon at Fort Adams. On Friday night, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis will perform at the International Tennis Hall of Fame, as will Dee Dee Bridgewater.
Among those playing during the day are Jonathan Batiste and Avant-garde composer John Zorn, who brings his Masada Marathon, two-and-a-half hours of music performed by nine groups of musicians.
Up-and-coming musicians include Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, which will perform a piece commissioned for the festival.
Among those performing Saturday are Marsalis and Trombone Shorty and on Sunday, Bobby McFerrin along with David Sanborn and Joey DeFrancesco.
Tickets are still available.
