DCYF suspends license of Newport day care
NEWPORT, R.I. —
The Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families on Friday suspended the license of a Newport child care center following the arrest of a 17-year-old who was charged with sexually assaulting a 5-year-old girl at the center.
DCYF investigators conducted an on-site inspection of the Tender Care Early Learning Center, and found several violations.
Earlier Friday, police told NBC 10 that the teenager is the son of the center's owner. Police said an employee provided police with evidence of the alleged sexual activity.
Police said the incident, in which the teenager allegedly put his hands up the child's shorts Tuesday, was caught on surveillance video.
The center said in a statement it's committed to providing quality child care and wants to reassure parents their children are safe.
The teen is being held at the Training School.
