NJ man pleads not guilty to taking RI teen for sex

A 27-year-old man pleaded not guilty Friday to a charge that he took a 13-year-old girl from Rhode Island to New Jersey for sex in a case that prompted an Amber Alert.

Daniel Berger, of Haskell, N.J., was indicted by a federal grand jury on a charge of transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity. The U.S. attorney said he pleaded not guilty in U.S. District Court in Providence.

Authorities said Berger communicated with the Portsmouth girl online, then on July 24 picked her up at her house and drove her to New Jersey.

The following day, the girl was found in his home, and he was arrested. He has been held since.

Berger's lawyer has said there are serious mental health issues in the case.
