Nuala Pell honored at Salve Regina University
NEWPORT, R.I. —
A special tribute was held Thursday night for Nuala Pell, the widow of Rhode Island's late U.S. Senator Claiborne Pell.
About 300 people attended the event at Salve Regina University in Newport.
The university honored Nuala Pell by naming a new leadership program after her for undergraduate students.
"I'm a little embarrassed because, to be honest, I really don't think I deserve it," she said. "But I know my husband, Claiborne, would've been so happy about. It's wonderful to further education. I love Salve. I think they've done a great job."
Vice President Joe Biden was supposed to attend, but withdrew due to medical concerns with his son.
U.S. Sen. Jack Reed spoke in his place. Reed succeeded Claiborne Pell in the Senate.
