Fatal shooting in Providence is 9th homicide of the year

Candles now mark the spot where a young man lost his life.

Providence Police confirmed the identity of 20 year old Jose Sanchez, who became the cities 9th homicide this year after he was fatally shot around 1:30 Saturday morning.

It happened right in front of Vicente Ayala's house. He says the gunfire woke him up and he looked out his window to see the victim lying on the ground..

Family members tell me Sanchez was the father of a baby girl, about to turn one.

Friends and loved ones came to the scene throughout the morning to add to the growing memorial.

Police told NBC 10 Sanchez, who pleaded no contest to a firearms possession charge last year, had an association with a local street gang and investigators are looking at that as a possible motive, but at this point no suspects in the case.

NBC 10 has learned the identity of the victim of the fatal shooting in Providence that is now being investigated as the city's 9th homicide this year.

The victim is Jose Sanchez, 20, who was found by Providence Police as they were responding to reports of shots fired just before 1:30 am on Saturday according to Providence Police Detective Captain Michael E. Correia.

The homicide is currently under investigation by the Providence Police. There are no suspects at this time, although police are not ruling out a gang affiliation as a possible motive.
