RI pension deal announcement postponed
PROVIDENCE — Attorneys for Rhode Island and state employee unions and retirees have postponed disclosing a proposed settlement of a lawsuit challenging the state's 2011 pension overhaul.
An announcement of a proposed deal was scheduled Wednesday, but the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service says it has been postponed indefinitely as mediation talks continue.
Labor unions and retirees are challenging the 2011 pension law and have been negotiating with state officials for more than a year. The landmark overhaul was designed to save billions of dollars by raising retirement ages and suspending pension increases.
Spokeswomen for Gov. Lincoln Chafee and Treasurer Gina Raimondo say they can't comment about the negotiations or the announcement being postponed because of a confidentiality agreement.
A Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service spokesman didn't immediately return a message Wednesday.
