NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — Saturday afternoon, military personnel joined family, friends and supporters of Lance Corporal Matthew Rodriguez at New Bedford Regional Airport to unveil the $225,000 playground built in the honor of Lance Corporal Rodriguez who was killed in Afghanistan in December.The 19 year old Marine died on December 11 after a roadside bomb exploded. Since then, his family raised $175,000 for construction of the aviation-themed playground. A foundation has also been set up in his name that will give $1,000 scholarships to New Bedford Voc-Tech students. "We need to make sure that his memory is honored. He was a happy guy. He was a fun-loving guy. A great Marine. And that's what we need to do, we need to bring that to life," said Rodriguez's mother.
