Central Falls police said they have arrested and charged a 19-year-old city resident with murder in a double homicide.
Police said they joined with state troopers and the U.S. Marshals Service to arrest Pedro Lopez without incident on Tuesday morning. Lopez was arraigned on two counts of first-degree murder and is being held without bail.
Police found 21-year-old Malcolm Townes and 22-year-old Nathan Lewis dead on July 3 in an apartment on Sylvian Street. Authorities said Tuesday an autopsy found that both victims died of injuries sustained from "sharp force."
"I can only say it was something consistent with a knife. We cannot take any further questions," Col. James Medonca of the Central Falls Police Department said at a news conference Wednesday.
Police wouldn't comment on a motive but did say that Lopez knew the two men.
Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Kilmartin congratulated police on their quick work, but said the investigation was far from over and that more arrests could be made.
"We still have a long way to go," he said.
Lopez is due back in court Aug. 13.
