A Fall River man faces attempted murder and armed robbery charges after police said he offered a pregnant woman cocaine, and then choked her as she tried to walk away.
Damien Curtis Brooks, 36, was arraigned Monday in Fall River District Court and charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault and battery, attempted murder, and aggravated assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
According to The Herald News, the victim told police that Brooks came up behind her and put her in a chokehold just after midnight Monday in the area of Plymouth Avenue and Hamlet Street. The newspaper reported she told police that Brooks demanded money and punched and kicked her in the face, even after she told him that she was pregnant.
The newspaper reported the victim has a "significant record" as a common nightwalker, according to court documents.
According to the newspaper, the victim told police that Brooks approached her and offered to sell her cocaine. She said she told him yes, but then took off when he went inside a nearby house, according to police reports.
While walking away she said Brooks assaulted her from behind. Police told the newspaper that the victim declined medical treatment.
Brooks is scheduled to return to court on Aug. 28 for a probable cause hearing.
