Police: Homeless man collected $10K for fake charity
Police in Mansfield have arrested and charged a man they said collected $10,000 in donations outside a supermarket for a fake charity.
Police said 52-year-old Gary Fincher set up a flag-covered table outside a Stop and Shop and said he was collecting money for the "National Chapter of "Help for Homeless Vets."
An off-duty Foxborough police officer saw the man, suspected the set-up was a scam and contacted Middleboro police.
After his arrest, Fincher told police he was homeless and that he was in the U.S. Army for 29 days in 1980 having been unable to complete basic training. He said he felt entitled to collect from people for being a homeless veteran.
He was held on $25,000 cash bail and was scheduled to be arraigned in Attleboro District Court on Tuesday.
