Police hunt for man who killed barbershop owner
EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. —
East Providence police are still searching for the killer who shot the owner of a barbershop to death Wednesday afternoon.
The shop still says it's open for business but candles and memorial markers have been placed outside, in memory of the owner who was shot inside his barbershop Wednesday.
The shooting happened just after 2 p.m. The victim, 42-year-old Yusef A'Vant, died at Rhode Island Hospital.
Police said they have leads but haven't caught a suspect yet.
On Wednesday police could be seen using dogs to search for a gun that may have been thrown aside in the area.
Family members told NBC 10 Wednesday night that they did not know why this would have happened.
"This is why we're so surprised, we're just trying to figure out who would have an issue with him that they would come and do such a horrible thing," said Cathy A'Vant, his aunt.
Family members also said that A'Vant has cousins and uncles who work as police officers.
We're told A'Vant was the only worker at his shop. He leaves behind a 13-year-old son.
