Police investigating death of 5-month-old infant in Providence
The Youth Services Bureau of the Providence Police Department is investigating the death of a 5-month-old baby.
The baby girl was found unresponsive Thursday between a bed and wall at a home on Canton Street.
According to the police report obtained by NBC 10, the baby's mother, Brittany Tavares, 21, and babysitter Shante Garlington, 43, left the baby and another child in the care of Jerrell Gomes, 24, when they went to a store.
The women said they were gone for 15 to 20 minutes. They said they couldn't find the baby when they got back and started searching for her. They eventually found the baby between a bed and a wall, but she was unresponsive.
The baby was taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital, where she died.
"A baby at 5 months old doesn't roll off a bed unless it's not being watched. And that's what I think happened. It wasn't being watched," said Karen Lewis, who works in the neighborhood.
The state Department of Children, Youth and Families said it would seek a Family Court order to place an 18-month-old sibling who is now living with a relative.
No charges were immediately filed.
