Providence man, 24, shot to death

Providence police say a 24-year-old city man was shot to death early Friday morning in the city's second homicide of the year.

Officers were called to Chalkstone and River avenues for reports of gunfire just after 1 a.m. Police said they saw glass and blood on a sidewalk, but couldn't find the victim.

Authorities were later called to Roger Williams Hospital on a report of a man being treated for a gunshot wound to his head. Police said Derreck Almanzar was transferred to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police haven't released information on suspects or a motive, but they said investigators are questioning a man and a woman who were in a car with Almanzar when he was shot.{} A person of interest was stopped on Interstate 95 in Warwick and taken into custody for questioning.

"What we believe is this victim was an intended target," said Maj. David Lapatin. "It was not a random shooting."

A friend said Almanzar was the father of a 4-year-old girl.

The city's first homicide victim of the year, 24-year-old Nelson Sanchez of Providence, was shot to death in a car last week by someone in another car. No arrests have been announced.
