Driver in fatal North Providence crash faces DUI charges

Daniel Gautreau faces drunken driving charges in connection with the fatal crash that killed his passenger.

Police have arrested the driver in connection with a crash in North Providence that killed one of his passengers and injured another.

Daniel Gautreau, 21, of Providence, was arrested Thursday and charged with driving to endanger death resulting, driving to endanger causing bodily injury, driving under the influence - death resulting, driving under the influence causing bodily injury, and reckless driving. He was arraigned in front of a justice of the peace and released on $10,000 surety bail. Gautreau is scheduled to be formally arraigned Monday.

Police said Gautreau was drunk and behind the wheel at about 1 a.m. when he lost control of his car in the 1200 block of Mineral Spring Avenue and struck a telephone pole. The car was split in two.

Dominic Guziejka, 21, of Pawtucket, was killed. He was sitting in the backseat and was thrown from the car. Another passenger remains hospitalized. Gautreau also suffered injuries.

NBC 10 learned that the group was leaving a party and about to drop Guziejka off at home when the car crashed.

Crystal Guziejka, Dominic's mother, told NBC 10 that she was upset to learn that Gautreau was already out of the hospital.

She told NBC 10 on Thursday that her son was an "awesome kid" and that he loved animals. He owned snakes as well as a dog.

"He's great. He's the best son that a mother could ever have," Crystal Guziejka said.

Dominic Guziejka was studying auto and diesel mechanics, but was taking a break from school.
