New Bedford police said a 21-year-old man ditched a loaded gun when he was spotted by officers patrolling Bay Village.
Jon Corey Sylvia of New Bedford was charged with unlawfully carrying a firearm, unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm and possession of a firearm with obliterated serial numbers.
Police said two officers were patrolling the South End when they spotted a man acting suspiciously near Grinnell Street and Acushnet Avenue.
State troopers tried to approach the man, but he ran away and threw a handgun into a yard. Police said the .38 caliber revolver was loaded with six rounds of ammunition and that the serial numbers were scratched out.
Sylvia was taken into custody without incident. Police said he does not have a license to carry a gun.
