Police nab alleged 'tire dumper' in Providence

Providence police have issued a summons to a man accused of dumping tires around the city as part of an ad hoc tire removal business.

The Providence Journal reported that used tires started appearing on streets in mid-February. Police said as many as 800 to 1,000 tires were dumped in vacant lots, school grounds and elsewhere.

Police issued a summons to David Almeida and ordered him to remove tires he dumped. He told The Associated Press on Wednesday he's getting rid of the tires, but he said he's been accused of a lot of things he didn't do. He would not elaborate.

Police said Almeida, 57, was offering a service to garages and repair shops to remove tires for $1 each. Businesses are supposed to use licensed services.
