Ponaganset High educator named teacher of the year

      David Moscarelli
A veteran science teacher in the Foster-Glocester school district has been named Rhode Island's teacher of the year.

David Moscarelli was named in a surprise ceremony at Ponaganset High School on Monday. He has worked there for his whole 22-year teaching career.

Education Board Chairwoman Eva-Marie Mancuso said Moscarelli's fellow teachers recognize him as a leader, consummate educator and technology guru and called him the perfect choice for the award. Gov. Lincoln Chafee said he sets high standards and provides his students with individual support.

Moscarelli will now represent Rhode Island as a candidate for the 2015 National Teacher of the Year award.

He lives in Providence and is a 1992 graduate of the University of Rhode Island.
