President to headline Newport fundraiser
NEWPORT, R.I. —
President Obama will visit Newport in August for a fundraising event, a White House official told NBC 10 News on Thursday.
The Aug. 29 fundraiser is for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the organization that raises money for House races.
"On Friday, August 29, the President will travel to the Westchester, NY area for (Democratic National Committee) events and to the Newport, RI area for a DCCC event. Further details about the President's travel to New York and Rhode Island will be made in the coming days," the White House official said.
The fundraiser will be held at a private home. Tickets will range from $10,000 to $32,000.
Both the Senate committee and the Congressional committee are eager to get the president to raise as much money as possible before November's elections.
But with both Rhode Island congressional seats relatively safe, it's likely the money raised in Newport will be distributed to more tightly contested races.
Local Democrats are fired up, no matter who gets the money.
"That's up to them what they want to do with the money. I don't think it necessarily means that the money has to stay in Rhode Island, but obviously we'd welcome it with open arms," said Jonathan Boucher, executive director of the state Democratic Party.
The first family will be vacationing on Martha's Vineyard from Aug. 9 to 24. The president will return to Washington before his visit to Newport.
