Professor says Chechnya ravaged by war, poverty
The family of the brothers sought in the Boston Marathon bombings has ties to Chechnya.
"He put shame on, shame on, the Tsarnaev family. He put shame on the entire Chechen ethnicity," said Ruslan Tsarni, the uncle of Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
Chechnya is an ethnic republic of Russia. Providence college professor Dr. Doug Bloom knows it well.
"I emphasize that we really don't have at this point really any reason to imagine that Chechens or Chechnya would have any particular beef with the United States. Their concern overwhelmingly at this point has been against Russia," Bloom said.
But Bloom said the region -- ravaged by war and rife with poverty -- as become a hot spot for Islamic extremists, including al-Qaida.
"But we do know there are Islamists from all over the Middle East from Yemen, From Saudi Arabia and other countries who have infiltrated this area of the northern Caucasus and have found common cause with some of the radical Islamists there," Bloom said.
Bloom said we still don't know if the two suspects were acting alone or part of a larger cell.
