Reed receives commendation from Portugal

The Portuguese ambassador to the U.S. presented U.S. Sen. Jack Reed with the Grand Cross of the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator, one of Portugal's highest civilian commendations.

U.S. Sen. Jack Reed has been honored for his efforts to strengthen American ties with Portugal with one of the highest honors given by the Portuguese president.

The Portuguese ambassador to the U.S., Nuno Brito, on Wednesday presented the Democratic senator with the Grand Cross of the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator, one of Portugal's highest civilian commendations.

One in 10 Rhode Islanders have Portuguese ancestry, the highest percentage of any state. Reed said he is honored to accept the award on their behalf.

The three-term senator is co-chairman of the bipartisan Friends of Portugal Caucus in the U.S. Senate.

He was presented with the medal during a State House ceremony attended by several Rhode Island officials with Portuguese ancestry, including Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed.
