Report: East Providence police chief put on leave

The police chief of East Providence has been placed on administrative leave.

The East Providence Post reported that Chief Joseph Tavares was relieved of his duties on Monday by the city manager.

The city manager told the newspaper that he would not comment on a personnel matter.

Tavares has been chief of the East Providence Police Department for three-and-a-half years. He was previously police chief in Warwick.

Maj. Christopher Parella was named acting chief.
