A former Swansea volunteer firefighter who killed a police officer in a drunken driving crash has been released from prison.

The Herald News reported that Wayne Smith was released Wednesday, about six years after pleading guilty to a manslaughter charge.

Lt. Robert Cabral was killed Nov. 5, 2005, when Smith's pickup truck crashed into Cabral's police SUV on Route 6. Cabral, 52, was a 26-year veteran of the police department.
