Report: RI sailor dies in fall at Naval Station Norfolk
A sailor from Rhode Island and based at Naval Station Norfolk has died after falling six stories from the balcony of a barracks.
WAVY-TV reported the victim was 22-year-old Morgan Hayman.
A representative from the base told the television station said two sailors were involved in a fight around 8:20 p.m. at Wall Manor, a barracks for transient personnel.
The two sailors were taken to a hospital where Hayman died.
WAVY-TV has learned the other sailor involved was 23-year-old Zachary Wilburn, of Tucker, Georgia. Wilburn was treated for his injuries and released.
According to the television station, Matthew Zapor worked with Hayman and Wilburn on the USS Harry S. Truman. Zapor said the two sailors were close friends and had lived together prior to deployment.
The U.S. Navy said Wall Manor is used for temporary and transitional housing and is more similar to a hotel than a traditional barracks.
According to the television station, no charges have been field, but the NCIS is investigating the incident.
