Hundreds of people linked hands along one of Rhode Island's prettiest beaches to celebrate its recovery from Superstorm Sandy.
Students, residents and business owners from Westerly gathered at Misquamicut beach Friday in a show of unity and thanks for the volunteers who helped the area recovery after last fall's storm.
Sandy carried off much of Misquamicut's beach, choked roads with head-high sand dunes and devastated area businesses and homes. Now the beach is restored and many businesses are rushing to complete repairs before the summer begins.
Bob and Chris Tassmer participated in Friday's event and say the recovery is especially important to the area's tourism economy.
More than 1,400 volunteers helped remove debris, repair homes and businesses and restore natural areas along the coast following the storm.
