RI DMV computer upgrade years behind

State officials say a major computer upgrade at the Division of Motor Vehicles is expected to be finished next April, nearly four years late and $7 million over budget.

The Providence Journal reports{} that details of the problems are obscure because many officials involved at the start of the project have left state government and current officials won't say much about it. The state also would not release documents describing what happened.

The project to replace the DMV's antiquated computer system began in 2006 and was supposed to be finished by mid-2010. The original contract price was $8.8 million, but the cost has ballooned to $15.5 million.

State motorists, meanwhile, are continuing to pay for the computer upgrade through a $1.50 surcharge on DMV transactions.
