RI groups receive $2.1M for AmeriCorps funding

Fourteen organizations in Rhode Island have received $2.1 million in federal funding to support AmeriCorps volunteer efforts.{}{} {}The funding, announced Monday by Gov. Lincoln Chafee, will pay for 333 AmeriCorps positions around the state.{}{} {}The organizations receiving the money include the Ocean State Environmental Education Collaborative, Teach for America, the Providence Children's Museum and the Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence, a Central Falls charter school.{}{} {}Many of the groups are involved in efforts to mentor, tutor and engage students from low-income homes.{}{} {}Other programs receiving funds aim to help veterans or provide health care to low-income families.
