A Rhode Island man has been charged with manslaughter in a car crash in Maine that killed a passenger.
The Waldo County Sheriff's Department says 27-year-old Alvaro Soares turned himself into authorities Wednesday on manslaughter, aggravated criminal operating under the influence and other charges. He was later released on $50,000 bail.
Police say Soares was driving from a family gathering with two passengers on the Fourth of July when his vehicle crashed into a utility pole in Thorndike.
The Kennebec Journal reported that 23-year-old Oscar Tizon-Brito, a Peruvian national living in Rhode Island, was killed. Soares and his sister, 22-year-old Kelley Soares, were seriously injured.
