RI Senate committee endorses $8.67 billion state budget

Rhode Island State House

A key committee in the Rhode Island Senate has endorsed an $8.67 billion state budget proposal for the coming year that legislative leaders say will help existing businesses and attract new industry.

The Senate Finance Committee unanimously approved the budget Wednesday, sending it to the Senate floor with no changes. A vote is expected Tuesday.

Some senators were concerned with a new tax on vacation rentals but still supported the budget.

They praised the funding to offer full-day kindergarten in every community, a longstanding Senate priority.

The House unanimously approved the budget and adjourned before 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, by far the quickest budget vote in nearly 30 years.

The state librarian says the budget hasn't passed both chambers unanimously since 1999.

The House speaker says the session will adjourn next week.
