RISP arrest CT motorist for carrying pistol
RICHMOND, R.I. —
Rhode Island State Troopers on Saturday arrested a Connecticut man during a traffic stop for carrying a pistol without a permit.
Troopers were patrolling Route 95 in the Town of Richmond around 3:00 am, when they encountered a vehicle exceeding the speed limit.
Troopers stopped the vehicle and while speaking to the operator, detected the strong order of burnt marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. The operators, as well as four additional occupants were asked to exit the vehicle for further investigation. A search of the vehicle was conducted and resulted in the seizure of a Bersa Thunder 9 Ultra Compact semiautomatic handgun from the glove compartment.
The front seat passenger, 24-year-old Kevin McKinnon of New London, Connecticut claimed ownership of the pistol. He was placed under arrest and charged with Carrying a Pistol without a Permit, which is a felony offense.
The operator, 23-year-old Ryan Johnson, age 23 of Ledyard, Connecticut had a suspended Connecticut license and was taken into custody for the suspended license charge and also issued a citation for speeding.
McKinnon and Johnson were returned to the Hope Valley Barracks where they were processed and held overnight. They were arraigned before a Justice of the Peace and released on Surety bail, pending future court appearances.
