Sakonnet Bridge toll hike delay bill becomes law
Legislation that pushes back the date at which Rhode Island's bridge authority can hike the 10-cent Sakonnet Bridge toll has become law without the governor's signature.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee took no action this week on the legislation pushing the date from April 1 to May 15.
The General Assembly's action was effectively moot, because the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority board had already voted to increase the Sakonnet toll starting May 16. Tolls on the Newport Bridge will go up instead if legislators block the Sakonnet increase.
The new approved Sakonnet rate is 50 cents for cars with Rhode Island E-ZPass transponders and $3.75 for everyone else.
As a backup, the Newport rates would climb to $1.04 for cars with in-state transponders and $5 for others.
