School choice supporters rally at State House
Supporters of school choice rallied Thursday at the Rhode Island State House, hoping to bring the issue to the attention of lawmakers.
"Every parent should have a choice as to where they send their kids to school," said John Jackson, the head of Bishop Hendricken High School.
Along with others at the event, he said he wants lawmakers in Rhode Island to consider a voucher program for school choice.
But at the moment, there's no such legislation in the works.
Mike Stenhouse of the Rhode Island Center for Freedom and Prosperity explained how families whose children attend public schools would pay for a private education.
"There'll probably be some public money available to families. In some cases, they may need to augment that money a little bit with their own," Stenhouse said.
Supporters said they think getting a voucher program will be tough, and they're planning to contact lawmakers to ask them to introduce legislation on this issue.
