Solomon says he's the only one that can beat 'Buddy'

Providence mayoral candidate Michael Solomon says he has poll numbers that prove he's the only one who can beat Vincent "Buddy" Cianci.

Providence mayoral candidate Michael Solomon said Tuesday he's the only person who can beat Vincent "Buddy" Cianci in a general election and said his poll numbers prove it.

The poll was conducted last week. More than 400 people were questioned.

Solomon said his results have him beating Cianci by 1 percentage point, with Republican Daniel Harrop coming in third.

The same poll showed Cianci would beat Democrat Jorge Elorza by 7 percentage points, with Harrop again coming in third.

Solomon blasted Elorza and Brett Smiley, who has dropped out of the race, for lumping his record in office with Cianci.

"I am proud of my record. I have spent the last four years as president of the city council cleaning up the messes that Mr. Cianci left behind. I'm proud to have worked hand in hand with Mayor (Angel) Taveras to pass the tough reforms needed to pull this city back from the brink of bankruptcy," Solomon said.

Solomon also charged Cianci with failing to properly fund the city's pension system.

Solomon did not release the results of polling for the Democratic primary. His poll also showed that more than 20 percent of city voters remain undecided.
