Students pledge they won't text and drive
EAST GREENWICH, R.I. —
About 200 East Greenwich High School students signed a pledge Wednesday not to text and drive.
The "It Can Wait" campaign is sponsored by the Rhode Island State Police, the state Department of Transportation and the state attorney general's office.
"We're trying to help spread the word that no message is so important that it can't wait," said Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Kilmartin.
Nearly 10,000 students across Rhode Island have made the same pledge, many of them before getting their driver's license.
"I knew texting and driving was bad but after seeing the video, I knew it was serious and it would have serious consequences," said student Vanessa Iannotti, who gets her license in January.
"To actually see stories about people losing daughters, brothers and sisters because of a simple text message that could have been avoided," said student Nathan Brindmour.
