Suspect ordered held in Providence murder
A Providence man was ordered held without bail Monday in connection with the fatal shooting of a 24-year-old.
Saul Rivera, 20, was arraigned on murder charges in Providence District Court.
Rivera is accused in the shooting death of 24-year-old Derreck Almanzar on Friday.
Authorities said the shooting started when Rivera assaulted Zaida Cuadrado, an ex-girlfriend. Cuadrado called friends for help.
Three men, including Almanzar, came to get her away from Rivera.
Police said Rivera tracked the group down, and shot and killed Almanzar.
Rivera was arrested and charged along Interstate 95 just hours after the shooting.
Rivera's family members were in court Monday to support him, but they had little to say after the arraignment.
"She should have called the police instead of friends, maybe none of this would have happened," a relative told NBC 10.
Rivera also faces an assault charge for the alleged attack on his girlfriend.
