Suspect wanted in connection with New Bedford death captured in Ga.
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. —
A suspect wanted in connection with the death of a New Bedford man was captured in Stone Mountain, Ga., the Bristol County District Attorney's Office said Thursday.
Sayyid Coggins, 36, of Providence, was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals early Wednesday morning.
Coggins was charged with being an accessory to murder-after the fact in connection to a suspicious fire at 55 Rounds St. and death of 29-year-old Justin Downey.
Coggins appeared in federal court in Atlanta on Thursday and waived rendition back to Massachusetts to face the accessory to murder charge. Once he arrives, he will be arraigned in New Bedford District Court.
New Bedford police received a 911 call at 8:30 a.m. on April 15 for a report of a fire at a home.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the second floor of the home. After putting out the fire, officials discovered a body later identified as Downey in the second-floor bedroom.
