Suspects in Providence beating death ordered held

Thomas Rose (left) 22, and Jared Jackson (right), 20, are both charged with the murder of 68-year-old Milton Lyles.

Three suspects charged in connection with the beating death of a man in Providence were ordered held without bail Monday.

Jared Jackson, 20, and Thomas Rose, 22, were each arraigned on a murder charge in Providence District Court. The third defendant, David Durrett, 31, was charged with larceny.

Police said Jackson and Rose beat 68-year-old Milton Lyles on Broad Street on May 19. Lyles died of his injuries June 13.

Durrett is accused of stealing money and a cellphone from Lyles while he was on the ground.

Police said they're investigating what led to the fight that landed Lyles in the hospital.

All three are due in court next month.
