      Swedish Easter Bread

      Makes 2 loaves

      Ingredients:

      1 cup milk

      1/2 stick butter

      1 package dry yeast

      1/4 cup warm water

      3 cup flour

      1/2 cup sugar

      1/2 teaspoon salt

      1 egg

      1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom

      Methodof Preparation:

      1. Heat milk and butter until just melted. Set aside. Dissolve dry yeast in warm water and allow to sit for 5 minutes. In a bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, egg and cardamom. Add the heated milk mixture and yeast and knead for 4 minutes. Place in large bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Allow to rise for 2 hours.
      2. Remove dough from bowl and divide in half for 2 loaves. Take each half and cut into 3 strips, leaving the top attached. Braid the three strips. Place braided loaves on cookie sheet and allow to rise 1 hour, covered with a kitchen towel.
      3. Brush with egg yolk. Sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
