Top Chafee aide Licht seeks opinion on judgeship
A top member of Gov. Lincoln Chafee's administration wants to become a judge.
Director of Administration Richard Licht has asked state ethics officials whether it would be appropriate for him to apply to join the Superior Court.
The Ethics Commission will take up Licht's request Oct. 8.
The governor nominates Superior Court judges based on recommendations from a nominating commission. The governor's pick must be confirmed by the state Senate.
Licht is a former state Senator and lieutenant governor. He is a Harvard Law School graduate who ran for the U.S. Senate as a Democrat in 1988 and 2000.
Licht told The Associated Press that he sees no reason to prevent him from applying for a vacancy on the court, but that he's seeking the commission's guidance to be sure.
