Omar Mazo said he smelled a very strong odor coming out of a container right next to his apartment on Sylvian Street in Central Falls.
"I thought it was (the trash) because it was so hot and I emptied it. We washed it down with water, bleach, everything. So (Wednesday) morning and I got up and I could still smell something in the air," he said.
Later that night, Mazo and other neighbors learned it wasn't trash but two bodies.
Col. James Mendonca of the Central Falls Police Department said officers responded to 18 Sylvian Street at about 3:50 p.m. Wednesday and the bodies of two men were found on the third floor of an apartment.
Mazo said he talked to a woman who lived downstairs from the apartment the bodies were found. She told him that maggots were dripping down into her apartment.
"I couldn't even imagine that," he said.
Arthur Messier lives across the street from 18 Sylvian Street.
He told NBC 10 that he heard two gun shots on Friday, but that he didn't see who fired the shots. Messier said he saw people driving away from the building but didn't call police because he doesn't have the best relationship with officers.
After hearing the shots, Messier said he hadn't seen the people living in the apartment.
Police haven't released any information about the men including their names, ages or how they died.
Wearing special masks, investigators spent Thursday searching the apartment.
Another neighbor told NBC 10 she knew the men who lived in the apartment. She said they were in their early 20s.
"They used to like my dog. They used to pet her all the time, talk to her," said the woman who did not want to be identified.
She said three men and a pregnant woman were usually at the apartment, but that she hadn't seen them in a week or two.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Central Falls Police Department.
