Two men injured in Providence drive-by shooting
Two men were transported to the hospital early Friday morning following a drive-by shooting outside a house on Prudence Avenue in Providence, police said.
Police said the shooting happened at about 1 a.m. Police said the shooter was in a black SUV.
"One man was shot in the back, the other in the calf," said Maj. David Lapatin of the Providence Police Department.
One victim lived at the house on 140 Prudence Ave. The other victim was visiting from Georgia.
Both men were transported to Rhode Island Hospital. The victim who was shot in the back was listed in serious condition.
Several neighbors said they were woken up by the noise.
"I heard this loud noise, four or five like it was shots," said Louis Furia, who lives next door to where the shooting happened.
Furia said he always sees children playing in the yard and on the sidewalk.
"It's getting worse instead of better," said neighbor Barry Bellville.
Bellville said he listened as the two men tried to keep each other alive.
"The other guy was trying to tell the guy who got shot in the back, 'Stay awake, don't go to sleep,'" he said.
The two men were the fourth and fifth victims of gun violence reported in Providence this week. Three people were shot Wednesday on Hudson Street.
Last Friday, a 20-year-old man was shot to death on Westminster Street.
"I knew it was coming because in Providence, every other day there's a shooting or something," Furia said.
Police have not made any arrests.
