University raises $2.1M for sailing center

Roger Williams University has brought in $2.1 million to build a new sailing center and is now more than two-thirds to reaching the project's fundraising goal.

The school says it raised $1.7 million at a live auction last weekend. That included a $1 million personal contribution from Board of Trustees Chairman Richard Bready and $500,000 from a sailing family in Florida.

The $3 million center will be home to the university's co-ed sailing team, which was ranked number one nationally in 2011.

University President Donald Farish says the facility has "transformative potential" for the school but will also be of tremendous value to the community.

The university hopes to break ground in March.

The auction was held at the Herreshoff Marine Museum in Bristol.
