Westerly officials say the town was overcharging for parking tickets for years.
The Westerly Sun reports that Police Chief Edward St. Clair told the town council on Monday that they had been charging $25 per instance of overtime parking when a town ordinance only allows a fine of $15.
Council Vice President Kenneth Parrilla says a town official apparently increased the amount several years ago but no one could explain why or when the change was made.
St. Clair says he was alerted to the problem this summer and then changed the ticket amount to $15.
Westerly lawyer Robert Lombardo says he told town officials about it back in January after he got two $25 tickets. He asked the council how people will be repaid.
Councilor Caswell Cooke Jr. said people should be refunded.
