Woman accused of embezzling from Boy Scouts arraigned
WEST WARWICK, R.I. —
A woman accused of embezzling more than $8,000 from a Coventry Boy Scout troop was arraigned Thursday.
Catherine Valenti was arraigned in District Court in Warwick on nine counts of embezzlement and released on personal recognizance. She's scheduled to back in court on July 29.
Valenti had no comment after her court appearance.
The 54-year-old West Warwick resident was treasurer of Troop No. 1 in Coventry.
The troop leader said he noticed a few months ago that their account balance was unusually low. He said they went to police and learned that Valenti had written nine checks to herself that dated back to April.
Police said she has made an effort to pay back some of the stolen funds.
The troop leader said activities will continue as planned, and that the stolen funds will not impact future activities for the scouts.
