Woonsocket voters trim field of mayoral candidates

Woonsocket voters went to the polls Tuesday to choose two mayoral candidates to face each other in next month's general election.

Four candidates were on the ballot: incumbent Mayor Leo Fontaine, state Rep. Lisa Baldelli-Hunt, Dave Fisher and Michael Moniz.

The race is non-partisan, and the top two vote-getters will appear on the ballot Nov. 5.{} The winner will serve an unusual three-year term as Woonsocket transitions to holding municipal elections in even years starting in 2016.

Woonsocket has been placed under the oversight of a state-appointed budget commission because of its troubled finances. The commission has sharply raised property taxes.

The Woonsocket Call reported that voters are also choosing seven candidates for City Council{} from a field of 15.
