Worm-like creature in New Bedford student's lunch
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. —
New Bedford High School has thrown out its stock of brown rice after a student found what she described as some sort of "nasty" bug or worm-like creature in her lunch.
School Business Manager Patrick Murphy told The Standard-Times the school received the rice from the federal government in the past month and it did not expire until 2014.
He described Wednesday's discovery as "an isolated incident," although several students described similar, but unconfirmed, bugs in their meals.
Junior Ereyana Silveira says the creature blended in with the rice, and was moving a little bit on her fork.
The city Health Department investigated but found no violations.
Murphy says exactly what the creature was, is not clear, but it was definitely not a maggot.
