Cicilline says Trump's use of term 'chain migration' is 'disrespectful'
NBC 10 News spoke with Rep. David Cicilline following President Donald Trump's State of the Union Address.
NBC 10 anchor Frank Coletta asked the congressman about the strong reaction Trump faced during one part of the speech, as he said several Democrats in the room "booed and hissed" when the president talked about ending "chain migration."
While Cicilline said he was not one of the lawmakers who was jeering the president, he said he finds Trump's use of the term "chain migration" offensive.
Ciclline said it is inapproprioate for the president to describe current family reunification policies, which allow immigrants to sponsor some extended family members for visas after becoming citizens, in such a manner.
"It’s a very disrespectful term," Cicilline said. "It's very hurtful for people to hear. This is a policy that promotes family unification."
