Ex-NFL star Aaron Hernandez hangs himself in his prison cell

Former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez was discovered hanged in his cell by corrections officers at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, Massachusetts at approximately 3:05 a.m. Wednesday.

The Massachusetts Department of Corrections said in a press release that lifesaving techniques were attempted on Mr. Hernandez and he was transported to UMASS Leominster where he was pronounced dead at 4:07 a.m. by a physician at the hospital.

Hernandez was in a single cell in a general population housing unit.

Hernandez hanged himself utilizing a bed sheet that he attached to his cell window according to corrections officials.

Hernandez also attempted to block his door from the inside by jamming the door with various items.

The Massachusetts State Police are on scene and the investigation continues. Mr. Hernandez’s next of kin have been notified.

Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office and the Department of Correction are investigating the death of Aaron Hernandez according to District Attorney Joseph Early Jr.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy in Boston to determine the cause and manner or death.

Mr. Hernandez was serving a life sentence after being convicted of first-degree murder in 2015 in the 2013 shooting death of Odin Lloyd in North Attleboro.

He was found not guilty last week of a 2012 double homicide in Boston.
